Rent Assistance in Australia


Australian Rent Assistance is a non-taxable income supplement paid to eligible people in Australia..

Rates on this page relate to the Rent assistance rates and thresholds which were increased on 20 September 2014.

Rates of Rent Assistance

Rent Assistance is paid at the rate of 75 cents for every dollar of rent paid above the specified rent threshold until the maximum rate is reached.
Thresholds vary according to a customer’s family situation.

Rates as at September 2014:

Rent Assistance rates if you do not have dependent children

Single, with no children $127.60 $113.20 $283.33
Single, with no children, sharer $  85.07 $113.20 $226.62
Couple, with no children $120.00 $184.20 $344.20
One of a couple who are separated due to illness, with no children $127.60 $113.20 $283.33
One of a couple who are temporarily separated, with no children $120.00 $113.20 $273.20

The above table shows that a Single person, with NO Children, can receive the maximum rent assistance payment of $127.60 per fortnight, IF they are paying more than $283.33 per fortnight in rent.
If that person is paying UNDER $113.20 in fortnighly rent they would NOT be entitled to Rent Assistance.
