Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday.

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, which is the 40-day period to prepare for Easter, celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Shrove Tuesday always occurs 47 days before Easter.

Lent is the Christian period leading up to Easter, a period when many people fast, and Shrove Tuesday was often the last opportunity for people to use foods such as their remaining eggs, milk and sugar.

Pancakes were one of the easiest ways to use up these ingredients before the fasting season began.

The USA celebrates the last day that people consume fatty foods, before Lent, as “Mardi Gras”, this is the French translation of the English wording “Fat Tuesday”.

Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday.” according to Merriam Webster: Mardi Gras.
