The Russian Prison Service has advised that Alexei Navalny died on Friday 16 February 2024 at age 47 years, while in a Russian prison in the Artic Circle, where he has been serving a 19 year jail term.
Alexei Navalny was an opposition leader fighting for true democracy in Russia.
His supporters say that Navalny was finally murdered, after surviving an assassination attempt in August 2020, when he was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent.
Novichok is a nerve agent developed at the GosNIIOKHT state chemical-research institute in Russia.
After surviving that assassination attempt, Navalny was convicted and sentenced to a prison term. This action kept him out of politics in Russia.
Both of his criminal cases were widely considered to be politically motivated and intended to bar him from running in future elections.
The Russian prison is in Kharp, about 1,900 km (1,200 miles) north east of Moscow.
Kharp, in the urban locality of the Priuralsky District of Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Russia, is the location of the Russian penal colonies IK-18 Polar Owl and IK-3 Polar Wolf.
