World War One Military Deaths

World War One came to an end One Hundred Years ago.

World War One cost the lives of almost 17 million people worldwide. Almost 7 million civilians (many through disease and malnutrition) and 10 million military personnel, lost their lives  Almost 2 out of every 100 people in the world.

The Armistice between the Allies and Germany came into effect at 11 a.m. Paris time, on 11 November 1918,  (the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month), ending more than four years of the deadliest war in history at the time. The war that began on 28 July 1914.

Total World War One Military Deaths (Killed in Action – KIA)

  • From a World population of 959.7 Million there were about 8.04 Million Military Personnel Killed in Action from a total of about 9.7 million (+/- 1.1 million) Military deaths. Total Deaths, including civilians came to about 17.3 Million (+/- 2 million) . This was about 1.79% of the population.
  • From the Entente Powers population of 806.6 Million there were about 4.83 Million Military Personnel Killed in Action from a total of about 5.8 Million (+/- 0.6 Million) Military deaths. Total Deaths, including civilians came to about 9.7 Million (+/- 0.4 Million( . This was about 1.15% of the population.
  • From the Central Powers population of 142.1 Million there were about 3.21 Million Military Personnel Killed in Action from a total of about 3.89 Million (+/- 0.5 Million) Military deaths. Total Deaths, including civilians came to about 7.7 Million (+/- 0.7 Million) . This was about 5.40% of the population.

From the Entente Powers there were 4.8 million Military personnel killed in action, from a population of 806 million. About 0.60% of their population.

  •  Russian Empire : 1,700,000 Military personnel killed in action, from a population of 175,100,000. About 0.97% of the population
  •  France : 1,150,000 Military personnel killed in action, from a population of 39,600,000. About 2.90% of the population
  •  United Kingdom (and Colonies) : 744,000 Military personnel killed in action, from a population of 45,400,000. About 1.64% of the population
  •  Italy : 460,000 Military personnel killed in action, from a population of 35,600,000. About 1.29% of the population
  •  Romania : 335,706 Military personnel killed in action, from a population of 7,500,000. About 4.48% of the population
  •  Serbia : 127,500 Military personnel killed in action, from a population of 4,500,000. About 2.83% of the population

From the Central Powers there were 3.2 million Military personnel killed in action, from a population of 142 million. About 2.26% of their population.

  •  Austria-Hungary : 1,016,200 Military personnel killed in action, from a population of 51,400,000. About 1.98% of the population
  •  Ottoman Empire : 305,085 Military personnel killed in action, from a population of 21,300,000. About 1.43% of the population
  •  Bulgaria : 87,500 Military personnel killed in action, from a population of 4,500,000. About 1.94% of the population
