Deaths in Donbas between 2014 and 2021.

Both Russia and the UN have stated that there were about 14,400 casualties in the Donbas area, (Donetsk and Luhansk), during the time between the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2014, and the second Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The United Nations, of which Russia is a member, has stated that about 10,900 victims were soldiers (both regular and militia) and about 3,500 were civilians.

A full breakdown is shown as:

  • 4,400 Ukrainian combatants.
  • 6,500 Russian and Pro-Russian combatants.
  • 3,200 Ukrainian civilians, killed mainly by the fighting between Russian and Ukrainian combatants.
  • 298 international citizens, all aboard being killed when Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down by a Russian missile.

Flight MH17 was shot down by a surface-to-air missile supplied by Russia to the People’s Republic of Donetsk, and launched by the local Russian supported militias.
