Deaths in the United Kingdom.

In the 10 weeks up to 25 December 2020 there have been 119,809 deaths in England and Wales.
61,546 of these were Male, and 58,263 were female.

  • 9,632 showed an underlying cause of death as respiratory disease.
  • 23,986 had COVID-19 mentioned on the Death Certificate.

In the first 10 weeks of 2020, up to March 2020, there were 117,244 deaths in England and Wales.

  • 18,367 showed an underlying cause of death as respiratory disease.
  • None had COVID-19 mentioned on the Death Certificate.

It was only from 31 March 2020 that these figures also show the number of deaths involving coronavirus (COVID-19), based on any mention of COVID-19 on the death certificate.

The breakdown of deaths in England and Wales, per 100,000 of UK population by age group, over the 10 week period to December 2020 were:

  • 1 deaths per 100,000 in age group 10-14
  • 3 deaths per 100,000 in age group 15-19
  • 6 deaths per 100,000 in age group 20-24
  • 8 deaths per 100,000 in age group 25-29
  • 12 deaths per 100,000 in age group 30-34
  • 19 deaths per 100,000 in age group 35-39
  • 28 deaths per 100,000 in age group 40-44
  • 41 deaths per 100,000 in age group 45-49
  • 63 deaths per 100,000 in age group 50-54
  • 95 deaths per 100,000 in age group 55-59
  • 149 deaths per 100,000 in age group 60-64
  • 223 deaths per 100,000 in age group 65-69
  • 366 deaths per 100,000 in age group 70-74
  • 657 deaths per 100,000 in age group 75-79
  • 1,143 deaths per 100,000 in age group 80-84
  • 2,076 deaths per 100,000 in age group 85-89
  • 4,147 deaths per 100,000 in age group 90+

Deaths involving COVID-19, all ages
The ONS figures showed 21,744 deaths with COVID mentioned, during the 10 weeks ended 18 Dec 2020.

  • 2 deaths in age group 10-14
  • 2 deaths in age group 15-19
  • 9 deaths in age group 20-24
  • 13 deaths in age group 25-29
  • 23 deaths in age group 30-34
  • 47 deaths in age group 35-39
  • 79 deaths in age group 40-44
  • 163 deaths in age group 45-49
  • 297 deaths in age group 50-54
  • 513 deaths in age group 55-59
  • 845 deaths in age group 60-64
  • 1,278 deaths in age group 65-69
  • 2,159 deaths in age group 70-74
  • 3,183 deaths in age group 75-79
  • 4,132 deaths in age group 80-84
  • 4,414 deaths in age group 85-89
  • 4,585 deaths in age group 90+

Note that up-to-date counts of the total numbers of deaths involving coronavirus (COVID-19) are published by Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) on the GOV.UK website.
ONS figures differ from the DHSC counts as the latter include deaths which have not yet been registered.
