August 2009 Unemployment rate

The number of unemployed people in the UK was 2.47 million in the three months to August 2009, up 88,000 from the three months to May 2009 and up 677,000 from a year earlier.

The number of people unemployed for over 12 months was 599,000 in the three months to August 2009, up 72,000 from the three months to May 2009.

The claimant count in September 2009 was 1.63 million, up 20,800 on the previous month and up 670,100 on a year earlier.

In February 2009 the number of people claiming key out of work benefits was 4.94 million, up 583,800 from February 2008
