According to the ABS 2001 Census. Basic Community Snapshots and Profiles, there were 281,578 Muslims in Australia in 2001.
This was about 1.5% of the National Population.

2011 Muslim Population by State

According to the ABS 2011 Census, there were 476,291 Muslims in Australia in 2011.

This was about 2.2% of the National Population, up from 1.5% in ten years.

The breakup by State was:

  • 3.20% New South Wales (up from 2.2% in ten years)
  • 2.90% Victoria (up from 2.0% in ten years)
  • 1.70% Western Australia (up from 1.1% in ten years)
  • 2.10% Australian Capital Territory (up from 1.1% in ten years)
  • 1.20% South Australia (up from 0.5% in ten years)
  • 0.70% Northern Territory (up from 0.5% in ten years)
  • 0.80% Queensland (up from 0.4% in ten years)

Largest Muslim Suburbs in Australia

Auburn in NSW was shown to be the location with the Highest Muslim Population in 2011. The Auburn State Suburb had 42% of the local population as Muslim, with 25.5% of the larger Auburn Local Government Area (LGA) shown as being Muslim.

Auburn, NSW (State Suburb) Change in Muslim Population Percentage

  • 2001: 36.8% of the local population were Muslim ( 9,737)
  • 2006: 40.9% of the local population were Muslim (12,251)
  • 2011: 42.0% of the local population were Muslim (13,920)
