Minimum Wage and Median Full-Time Wages 2010

Minimum wage levels in selected developed economies as a share of median full-time wages in 2010

From the ILO chart 28 in the Global Wage Report:

  • 60.1% France
  • 59.1% New Zealand
  • 51.9% Ireland
  • 51.8% Australia
  • 51.7% Belgium
  • 48.0% Portugal
  • 46.1% United Kingdom
  • 45.0% Canada
  • 43.6% Netherlands
  • 41.9% Greece
  • 38.8% United States
  • 37.6% Spain
  • 37.0% Japan

As the above percentages are the % of the median full time wage, once we have the rate of Minimum wage for each country we can then calculate the Median full time wage for each country, as used by the ILO.

eg:
Australia:

For 2012/2013 the Australian full-time minimum wage is $15.96 per hour or $606.40 per week.
This figure is 51.85% of the Australia Median full time wage, which must therefore be $1,170.66 per week

Canada

The Canadian minimum wage rate varies between $9.50 and $11 per hour. At an average of $10.10, this makes the Canadian median wage C$22.44 per hour  or $897.78 per week.

France

The French minimum wage rate of 330.05, means that the French Median Wage is 15.69 per hour or 549.17 per week (Euros)

New Zealand

The New Zealand minimum wage rate of NZ$13.75per hour means that the New Zealand Median wage is NZ$23.27 per hour or  NZ$930.63 per 40 hour week.

Minimum Wages from Eurostat

Minimum wage statistics published by Eurostat refer to monthly national minimum wages; data are published as on 1st of January and 1st of July each year.
For countries where the national minimum wage is not set monthly (e.g. hourly or weekly) the rates are converted into monthly rates according to conversion factors directly supplied by the countries:

  • Ireland: (hourly rate x 39 hours x 52 weeks) / 12 months;
  • France: data from July 2005: (hourly rate x 35 hours x 52 weeks) / 12 months;
  • Malta: (weekly rate x 52 weeks) / 12 months;
  • United Kingdom: (Hourly rate x Mean Basic Paid Hours per week for full-time employees in all sectors x 52.18 weeks) / 12 months;
  • United States: (hourly rate x 40 hours x 52 weeks) / 12 months.

In addition, when the minimum wage is paid for more than 12 months per year (as in Greece, Spain and Portugal, where it is paid for 14 months a year), data have been adjusted to take these payments into account.
