It has been suggested that Scott Morrison, the Australian Prime Minister, should be impeached for going on holiday, and leaving the Deputy PM as acting PM while he is away.

Impeachment is enshrined in the United States constitution, not in Australia.

  • Impeachment is the process by which a legislative body levels charges against a government official. Impeachment does not in itself remove the official definitively from office; it is similar to an indictment in criminal law, and thus it is essentially the statement of charges against the official.

Scott Morrison hasn’t committed an offence, and can't be impeached even under US law. He was in communication with people during his holiday stay, using phones etc.

But, some people, (the opposition?) think he should be in his office doing it, instead of doing the same thing while out of the country. Not sure why.

There is a deputy PM while a PM is away for that sort of thing.

  • Deputy PM Michael McCormack will remain as acting PM until Scott Morrison returns and resumes as PM.

Some people (US?) are impeachment happy…

Impeachment’ has never been used in Australia, and can’t be used. A PM can be removed though for various offences. Going on holiday on Australia is not normally an offence.
