I gave some meat to our dog the other day, and there was some potatoes in with it, all covered in gravy. The dog seemed to like it, but I wondered if Potato is a safe food for dogs.
So I checked around and found one web site that said it was safe, however they also suggested never giving bones to a dog ?
Another website has two answers:
No, dogs should not eat potatoes. Their digestive system does not digest the starch properly.
Yes, dogs can eat potatoes but not with onion or garlic.
Another website says that potato contains oxalates, which affect the digestive, nervous, and urinary systems.
The real answer ?
I will go by this one from American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)
- A bit of ripe potato here and there shouldn’t cause any problems for your dogs
- The alkaloids in potato can, if eaten in large enough amounts, produce various side effects.
They may even do the same to us, if eaten in large enough amounts 🙂
