World’s Average Wages 2012

The International Labour Organization released figures of Average Earnings worldwide in 2012, and the BBC has a webpage where you can enter your own Pre Tax Income to see how it compares to the worlds averages. Although released in 2012, the figures were for 2009.

The site uses PP to do its comparisons, and this may be confusing to some people.
PPP = Purchasing power parity which is the ratio between the currencies of two countries at which each currency when exchanged for the other will purchase the same quantity of goods as it purchases at home excluding customs duties and costs of transport. Merriam Webster Dictionary

I entered the following figures to get to the average for each country:

Australia A$4,050 Gross per month
Your wage is $2,613. The world average is $1,480.
Your wage is 100% of the Australia average and 177% of the world average.
These figures are in PPP$

United Kingdom GBP £2,080 per month
Your wage is $3,059. The world average is $1,480.
Your wage is 100% of the United Kingdom average and 207% of the world average.
These figures are in PPP$

United States US$3,263
Your wage is $3,263. The world average is $1,480.
Your wage is 100% of the United States average and 220% of the world average.
These figures are in PPP$

Philippines 7,580 Pesos
Your wage is $279. The world average is $1,480.
Your wage is 100% of the Philippines average and 19% of the world average.
These figures are in PPP$

Obviously these PPP rates are based on the US$ being 1 for 1, but using the Currency Exchange rates at 3rd April 2013, we get the following:

Australia A$4,050  = $2,613 in PPP$, but US$2,731.37 US Dollar, (or £1,810.41 British Pounds).

United Kingdom GBP £2,080 = $3,059 in PPP$, but US$3,138.10 US Dollars.

Philippines 7,580 Pesos = $279 in PPP$, but US$185.33 US Dollars.

I am trying to work this out, but it seems to say that, to get an average standard of living, you need the following wage in each country.

United States US$3,263 or £2,163 British or A$3,122 Australian or 133,457 Philippine Peso.

Australia A$4,050 or US$ 2,731.37 US Dollar or £1,810.41 British Pounds.

United Kingdom GBP £2,080 or US$3,138.10 US Dollars or A$3,002 Australian.

Philippines 7,580 Pesos or US$185.33 US Dollars or A$177.32 Australian Dollars or £122.84 British Pounds.

Hmmm…   Maybe I should see how it really looked in 2009…

Other figures from the International Labour Organization Global Wage Report 2012/13 include:

International comparison of hourly direct pay for time worked in manufacturing, 2010 (US$)

    • $1.41 Philippines
    • $21.16 United Kingdom
    • $23.32 United States
    • $26.29 Ireland
    • $28.55 Australia
