DivX files on a Home DVD Player

With a home DVD player that states it can play avi and DivX files, what reason would there be for it not actually playing a DivX file with the following extensions ?

  • filename-xvid.r01
  • filename-xvid.r02

etc all the way up to

  • filename-xvid.r48

Also can all the files be combined together, as one file ?
Each file is about 14mb in size

When the above files are individually extracted, using winzip or similar, each files extracts to an individual avi file that plays perfectly OK, although is a very large avi file.
Is this the way it should be done ?

As you guessed, I am no expert on these things…
