Mothers Day Mothering Sunday

I was just reading a newspaper where it was saying that Mothers Day was first celebrated in 1911, and was created by Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia USA.

This made me stop and double check what I thought was correct, as I thought that the UK was celebrating this many years before 1911.

And yes, sort of, I was right. The first Mothering Sunday, was held back in the 17th Century.

It appears the Americans renamed it Mothers Day, and claimed it for themselves !!!

The end result is that there are actually two Mothers ‘days’ being celebrated:

The dates of Mothering Sundays in the United Kingdom:

  • 2010 – March 14
  • 2011 – April 03
  • 2012 – March 18
  • 2013 – March 10
  • 2014 – March 30

The dates of Mothers Days in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the USA, and just about everywhere else in the world.

  • 2010 – May 09
  • 2011 – May 08
  • 2012 – May 13
  • 2013 – May 12
  • 2014 – May 11

France is of course different, with the dates being:

  • 2010 – May 30
  • 2011 – May 29
  • 2012 – May 27
  • 2013 – May 26
  • 2014 – May 25
