Average Working hours in Australia
« on: Thu, 10 Mar, 2011, 09:23:16 AM »
A report compiled by BankWest has shown that the average Australian is working fewer hours per week in 2010 than they were ten years earlier in 2000.

Quote
Full-timers average 41.4 hours per week, down 1.3 hours vs ten years ago (42.7 hours per week in 2000).

The above quote is from: www.bankwest.com.au/.../Bankwest_Working_Times_Report_2010

The ABS 6202.0 - Labour Force survey however, with its much larger range of figures, can show a slightly different picture:

Male Full Time Workers

Change in Average weekly hours from 1980 to 2010, based on December only.
  • 39.9   Dec-1980
  • 40.5   Dec-1990
  • 41.6   Dec-2000
  • 40.3   Dec-2010 (a drop of 1.3 hours over 10 years or an increase of 0.4 hours over 40 years.)
However, these figures only show the hours in one month in each 10 year period.

Using the averages for each year, ie: all of 2010 instead of just December 2010, we get the following figures:
  • 40.1   1980
  • 40.7   1990
  • 42.4   2000
  • 40.7   2010 (a drop of 1.7 hours over 10 years or an increase of 0.6 hours over 40 years).

Using a larger sample, and taking an average of each entire ten year period, we get this result:
  • 39.9    Jul 1978 to Dec 1980 (Data prior to 1978 not available)
  • 40.1    Jan 1981 to Dec-1990
  • 42.0    Jan 1991 to Dec-2000
  • 41.2    Jan 2001 to Dec-2010 (a drop of 0.8 hours over 10 years, but an increase of 1.3 hours over the 40 year period).

Female Full Time Workers:

Change in Average weekly hours from 1980 to 2010, based on December only.
  •    36.4   Dec-1980
  •    36.5   Dec-1990
  •    37.6   Dec-2000
  •    36.9   Dec-2010 (a drop of 0.7 hours over 10 years or an increase of 0.5 hours over 40 years.)

Using the averages for each year, ie: all of 2010 instead of just December 2010, we get the following figures:
  •     36.7    Year 1980
  •     36.7    Year 1990
  •     38.1    Year 2000
  •     36.8    Year 2010 (a drop of 1.3 hours over 10 years or an increase of 0.1 hours over 40 years).

Using a larger sample, and taking an average of each entire ten year period, we get this result:
  •     36.5    Jan 1981 to Dec 2000
  •     36.5    Jan 1981 to Dec 2000
  •     37.6    Jan 1991 to Dec 2000
  •     37.3    Jan 2001 to Dec 2010 (a drop of 0.3 hours over 10 years, but an increase of 0.8 hours over the 40 year period).

Figures for all workers using the same method as above:

ALL Full Time Workers

Change in Average weekly hours from 1980 to 2010, based on December only.
  •    38.9   Dec-1980
  •    39.3   Dec-1990
  •    40.3   Dec-2000
  •    39.1   Dec-2010    (a drop of 1.2 hours over 10 years or an increase of 0.2 hours over 40 years.)

Using the averages for each year, ie: all of 2010 instead of just December 2010, we get the following figures:
  •     39.1    Year 1980
  •     39.4    Year 1990
  •     41.0    Year 2000
  •     39.3    Year 2010    (a drop of 1.7 hours over 10 years or an increase of 0.2 hours over 40 years).

Using a larger sample, and taking an average of each entire ten year period, we get this result:
  •     38.9    Jan 1981 to Dec 2000
  •     39.0    Jan 1981 to Dec 2000
  •     40.6    Jan 1991 to Dec 2000
  •     39.9    Jan 2001 to Dec 2010    (a drop of 0.7 hours over 10 years, but an increase of 1.0 hours over the 40 year period).

Figures used for all these examples are the Seasonally Adjusted results from the ABS 6202.0 - Labour Force survey.

The results are to show the trend in changing overall hours, not the actual hours worked weekly, as this varies depending on many different circumstances.
