Speeding Penalties in Australia

Speeding is not tolerated in most of Australia, and penalties are imposed very quickly for speeding offences.

Examples of these penalties, for each Australian State, are as follows:

Australian Capital Territory

2010 Penalties for speeding in ACT

  • Less than 15 km/h over the limit: $157 + one point.
  • 15 to 30 km/h over the limit: $245 + three points.
  • 31 to 45 km/h over the limit: $664 + four points.
  • More than 45 km/h over the limit: $1,811 + six points

Demerit Points

Licence Suspension is automatic once you reach 12 points in 3 years, but the suspension period varies depending on the total points, ie:

  • 12 to 15 points = 3 months Licence Suspension
  • 16 to 19 points = 4 months Licence Suspension
  • 20 or more = 5 months Licence Suspension

New South Wales

2010 Penalties for speeding in NSW

  • Less than 10 km/h over the limit: $84 + one point.
  • 11 to 20 km/h over the limit: $197 + three points.
  • 21 to 30 km/h over the limit: $338 + four points.
  • 31 to 45 km/h over the limit: $647 + five points and three months suspension.
  • More than 45 km/h over the limit: $1,744 + six points and six months suspension.

Demerit Points

Licence Suspension is automatic once you reach 12 points in 3 years, but the suspension period varies depending on the total points, ie:

  • 12 to 15 points = 3 months Licence Suspension
  • 16 to 19 points = 4 months Licence Suspension
  • 20 or more = 5 months Licence Suspension

Double Demerit Points apply for all declared public holiday long weekend periods in NSW. This information is subject to change at any time, and may be extended.

Northern Territory

2010 Penalties for speeding in NT

  • Less than 15 km/h over the limit: $100
  • 16 to 30 km/h over the limit: $200
  • 31 to 45 km/h over the limit: $300
  • More than 45 km/h over the limit: $500

Queensland

2010 Penalties for speeding in Queensland

  • Less than 13 km/h over the limit: $133 + one point.
  • 13 to 20 km/h over the limit: $200 + three points.
  • 21 to 30 km/h over the limit: $333 + four points.
  • 31 to 40 km/h over the limit: $466 + six points.
  • More than 40 km/h over the limit: $933 + eight points and six month suspension.

Demerit Points

Licence Suspension is automatic once you reach 12 points in 3 years, but the suspension period varies depending on the total points, ie:

  • 12 to 15 points = tba
  • 16 to 19 points = tba
  • 20 or more = tba

Double demerit points apply in Queensland to drivers and motorbike riders who commit a second offence, where the speed limit is exceeded by 20km/h or more, within a 12 month period.

South Australia

2010 Penalties for speeding in SA

  • Less than 15 km/h over the limit: $190 + one point.
  • 15 to 30 km/h over the limit: $302 + two points.
  • More than 31 km/h over the limit: $453 + four points.

Demerit Points

Licence Suspension is automatic once you reach 12 points in 3 years, but the suspension period varies depending on the total points, ie:

  • 12 to 15 points = 3 months Licence Suspension
  • 16 to 19 points = 4 months Licence Suspension
  • 20 or more = 5 months Licence Suspension

  • 16 to 19 points = 4 months Licence Suspension
  • 20 or more = 5 months Licence Suspension

  • 11 to 25 km/h over the limit: $tba + three points.

  • More than 45 km/h over the limit: $tba + eight points.

Licence Suspension is automatic once you reach 12 points in 3 years with a minimum 3 month suspension.
