Milk Prices in Australia

The price of Milk in Australia…

Government figures released in November 2009 show the following prices for a 2 litre bottle of milk, in each State Capital.

  • $ 4.17 Darwin
  • $ 3.71 Canberra
  • $ 3.70 Hobart
  • $ 3.58 Melbourne
  • $ 3.44 Adelaide
  • $ 3.43 Sydney
  • $ 3.21 Perth
  • $ 3.18 Brisbane

The source of these figures is the Australian Bureau of Statistics 6403.055.001 Average Retail Prices of Selected Items, Eight Capital Cities

My price in November 2009, from a local vegetable store is $1.79 for two litres.

Checking the online price from two supermarkets I found:

  • Woolworths (AUS): Homebrand Milk Whole 2L $2.17 (21% higher than the price I pay)
  • Tescos (UK): OL Pasturized Milk 2L £1.18 (or about $2.27 at todays FX rate) (27% higher than the price I pay)

This made me wonder, which Milk do the ABS check the price on ?
So I found these:

  • Australia
    • Woolworths $3.39 Dairy Farmers Milk Whole 2L
  • UK
    • Tescos: £1.64 Cravendale whole Milk 2 Litres (or $3.16 at todays FX rate)

June 2009 prices were:

  • $ 4.10 Darwin
  • $ 3.71 Canberra
  • $ 3.70 Hobart
  • $ 3.61 Melbourne
  • $ 3.53 Adelaide
  • $ 3.41 Sydney
  • $ 3.22 Perth
  • $ 3.18 Brisbane

I get mine at the local Fruit and Veg store for $1.99, for 2 litres, but ALDI do it for $2.19, or sometimes cheaper.

What price do you pay ?

  • In March 2000 the WA standard price for milk was $1.46 for Milk, carton, supermarket sales (1 litre).

This info so from the ABS at this PDF file: http://www.ausstats.abs.gov.au/Ausstats/subscriber.nsf/0/FA1206FB5C7AA12BCA2568DB0002EE4B/$File/64030_mar%202000.pdf

Perth was the most expensive City for Milk at the time and Canberra the cheapest at $1.20.

The latest, 2010 figures, show Perth as: $3.15 for 2 ltr whole milk (ie $1.58 per litre), not really that much higher after 10 years.

However Canberra is now $3.89, the most expensive City for Milk in 2010.

  • Bread prices from the same source:
    2000: $2.24 Bread, white loaf, sliced,(650 g)
    2010: $3.25 Bread white loaf, sliced (650g-750g)
