House Sizes in Australia

The floorplan sizes of new houses in Australia has been getting larger and larger every year, for many, many years.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the average new Australian home in 1984/85 was 149.7 square metres of floorspace.

A report by BIS Shrapnel has quoted the 1999 floorspace size as 228.1 square metres, and its latest figures are 253.1 square metres.

These figures obviously vary by State, with NSW appearing to have the largest average home size of 308.3 square metres of floor space, up from 248.9 in 1999.

Land sizes for each average property have been shrinking, whilst the houses sizes are increasing, consequently the garden sizes are getting much smaller.

In 1911 the average Australian house was home to 4.5 people. In 2009 it is now only 2.55 people. Much larger houses these days, for a much smaller number of people. Times have changed.
